Antioxidant properties have been reported for isoflavones both in vitro and in vivo. Equol, in model membrane systems, was a more effective antioxidant than genistein or the parent compound daidzein [37], and shows structural similarity to the tocopherols [7]. Furthermore, soya isoflavone consumption 56 mg\day for 17 days ; has been reported to decrease plasma isoprostane biomarker for lipid peroxidation ; concentrations [38]. Antioxidant action could contribute to anticancer ability because reactive oxygen species could initiate signal transduction through the mitogenactivated protein ` MAP ' ; kinases [7]. The antioxidant action of phytoestrogens may contribute also to their cardioprotective properties. Isoflavones can protect low-density lipoprotein LDL ; against oxidative modification in vitro [37]. Furthermore, in a recent study, resistance of LDL to oxidation showed a significant increase following the high isoflavone dietary treatment [38]. These observations suggest that soya isoflavones may protect against the oxidative damage implicated in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease generally [38]. Genistein may enhance the action of TGF [31, 39]. This action may be a link between the effects of genistein in a variety of chronic diseases, including atherosclerosis and hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia HHT ; the OslerWeber Rendu syndrome ; , in which defects in TGF signalling have been characterized [40, 41]. Indeed, pilot studies have shown that genistein consumption significantly alleviated symptoms in patients with HHT [41]. However, many flavonoids, such as the flavonol quercetin and also the isoflavone genistein, have been shown to inhibit the action of enzymes such as sulphotransferases important for inactivating the endogenous oestrogens implicated in breast cancer [42], suggesting that further human studies to gain a complete picture of all the biological actions of isoflavones in vivo are clearly required.
Thus, during pregnancy in humans, isoflavones per se could be a risk factor for abnormal brain and reproductive tract development.
Scambia et al. 2000 ; and the other one where almost one third of the subjects discontinued the trial Faure et al. 2002 ; Table 14A ; . The inconsistency of the data has been explained by the presence of soy protein soy diet ; or its lack isolated isoflavonoids ; , although the clinical effects seem to be of the same magnitude with Table 14B ; or without Table 14A ; soy protein. The initial and very promising data were often obtained from trials using no placebo control, which casts doubts on the specificity of the claimed benefit. The use of isoflavonoids had no objective beneficial effect on vaginal dryness in our subjects. This is not in line with the results of some other studies suggesting that soy isoflavones 100118 mg day ; Kotsopoulos et al. 2000, Han et al. 2002 ; alleviated vaginal dryness. It should also be noted that isoflavonoids have had no effect on vaginal epithelium in most previous studies Albertazzi et al. 1999, Baber et al. 1999, Duncan et al. 1999, Scambia et al. 2000, Upmalis et al. 2000 ; , although the data are not uniform Wilcox et al. 1990, Baird et al. 1995, Dalais et al. 1998 ; . Moreover, our isoflavonoid regimen was not accompanied by any estrogenic effects in the endometrium, which we investigated with the aid of ultrasonography, histology and the expressions of markers reflecting endometrial reactivity to various steroid hormones. It was known before that isoflavonoid supplements 40132 mg day ; for 36 months do not affect endometrial thickness or histology Baber et al. 1999, Duncan et al. 1999, Scambia et al. 2000, Upmalis et al. 2000, Balk et al. 2002, Penotti et al. 2003 ; , but the effects of isoflavonoids on expression of ER and PR in human endometrium had never been studied before. After the start of our trial it was reported that red cloverderived isoflavones 50 mg day ; do not affect the expression of endometrial Ki-67 in perimenopausal women Hale et al. 2001 ; . We can now expand this knowledge to concern postmenopausal women, whose endometrium remained totally unaffected by isoflavonoid supplementation. Bone mineral density not to mention incidence of fractures ; takes years to show any changes in response to any treatment. Hence, various markers reflecting bone resorption and formation are most often used to assess the effects of a given compound on bone, and they respond to various treatments well in three to six months Delmas 2000 ; . Isoflavonoid treatment was found to reduce the output of bone resorption markers in our study. However, this response was not so marked as reported in some other trials involving genistein; 54 mg day was claimed to decrease Pyr output by 54% and Dpyr output by 55% in six months Morabito et al. 2002 ; . It has also been reported that whole soy foods containing isoflavones 60 mg day ; cause a fall of 14% in NTx levels in three months Scheiber et al. 2001 ; . However, in some other trials, isoflavones 4782 mg day ; have led to no changes in NTx 55.

A designated individual should be present to monitor the patient throughout the procedure. This individual should be able to recognize all complications associated with sedation, understand the pharmacology of the agents that are administered, and understand the role of pharmacologic antagonists for opioids and benzodiazepines. In addition, at least one individual with advanced life-support skills should be immediately available and isoniazid.

It has been reported that many bifidobacteria17 and some other lactic acid bacteria3, 14 hydrolyze isoflavone glycosides into corresponding aglycones. In general, isoflavones express higher biological activity such as estrogenlike activity in the aglycone form, since aglycone isomers are able to bind to hydrophobic sites of receptors or enzyme proteins16. Thus, it is expected that the biological activity of soybean milk increases after fermentation using the strains which could hydrolyze isoflavone glycosides. From these results, it is concluded that the most suitable strains to produce the yogurt-like fermented soybean milk containing high concentrations of isoflavone agly.

Study Design: Secondary data analysis of the Alcohol and Drug Services Study, which is a large, nationally representative sample of treatment facilities and their clients, funded by SAMHSA. Logistic regression is used to predict the probability of abstinence; independent variables consist of facility and client characteristics, and treatment and wraparound services. Wraparound services include employment counseling, academic education, medical care, housing assistance, financial counseling, legal counseling, prenatal care, HIV AIDS education, and psychological testing. Objective 1 is tested by identifying clients with a specific need for a service, and comparing the results of the regression analyses between those who received the service and those who did not; the first group is also compared to clients with no need for a service. Objective 2 relies on a created ratio of the number of services needed and received to the number of services needed; this ratio is included in the regression analysis, as a specific predictor of abstinence. Need for a service is determined retroactively, based on existing data. Population Studied: Clients discharged from a sampled episode of outpatient non-methadone treatment, and who participated in the follow-up interview, an average of one year after discharge. The sample consists of 899 clients from 143 treatment facilities. Data was collected from 1997-2000 and ketorolac.

Soy Consumption of Taiwanese Children in Taipei. K. Hsiao * and P. Soybeans have been a staple food in the traditional Asian cuisine for many centuries. Recent experimental evidence has shown that soy consumption could be a contributing factor to the low rates of heart disease and cancer observed in Asian communities, yet controversy remains as to whether eating soy is beneficial for children--mainly because of the presence in soy of the weakly estrogenic isoflavones. This study examined the range and frequency of intake of soy foods in Taiwanese children in Taipei aged 8 9 y. Total isoflavone intakes were estimated by using a food frequency questionnaire and compared with selected demographic variables. Children consumed a diversity of soy products 20 different items ; reflecting the use of soy as a traditional staple food in the Taiwanese cuisine. The most commonly consumed items were soymilk, with a mean intake of 655 g wk, soft tofu 207 g wk ; , and firm tofu 120 g wk ; . associations were found between isoflavone intakes and demographic characteristics such as age, body mass index, and family income. The average daily intake of isoflavones in this study 39 mg d ; is comparable with intakes that have resulted in physiological effects in young women. However, no effects have been reported in children, either anecdotally or in the scientific literature. The potential estrogenic effects of isoflavones may be lowered in children because of the first-pass effect in the liver or the tissues of children may be less sensitive to the effects of isoflavones than tissues of adults. The final result: using the kupperman index to quantify menopausal symptoms, the group taking the isoflavone experienced measurable decreases in almost all symptoms, including hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, headaches and palpitations and loxitane.
Impaired mental ability during oestrus when hormone levels were low compared to proestrus when hormone levels were at their highest. As vaginal smears were not taken throughout the experiment it is unclear if the rats were displaying normal oestrous cycles, or if this small amount of phytoestrogen had been strong enough to block the LH surge. These previous findings do not support the results that were found in this study. Comparison of oestrus and proestrus performance in the open field arena was not significant P 0.05 ; P 0.778. Changes in body weight during the study may have been a result of the oestrous cycle. During oestrus the body weight is expected to be the lowest due to the increase in activities such as wheel running and a decrease in food consumption Lewis et al., 2003 ; . However, our rats were still growing so we expected them to still gain weight, although the rate of gain may decrease during oestrus. This decrease in food consumption and therefore isoflavones may explain the lower level of performance that was seen during this stage of the cycle.
