The mechanism of action of modafinil is unknown. It is considered a relatively safe medication, because there are very few serious side effects. The most common side effect is that of headaches. In addition, one of the most commonly used stimulants in the treatment of narcolepsy is methylphenidate. This is also a very effective stimulant. It comes in regular formulations so that it has a half-life of ordinarily three to four hours. In addition, there are sustained-release as well as control-release formulations for patients who require sustained alertness.
